Gashouse cove

A small boat harbor in the Marina district of San Francisco with aged facilities, silting up from lack of routine dredging.  MGP contamination first found in 1994.  Subject of a lawsuit, unsuccessful, between San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and PG&E in 2001.  Video of contamination seeping from underground deposits and bubbling to the surface taken by a berth holder in 2012.  Attempt in 2016 to halt the seeping with an interim remediation measure (a mat designed to absorb escaping contamination) failed; visual monitoring and reporting of the bubbling from 2016 to present.

Photos of the interim remediation measure location and construction are here.

A recent report of the monitoring of the bubbling is here

Subject of a  $190M settlement and release agreement between San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and PG&E in 2021.  Current plan is to remove a minimum amount of contamination in one section and add a “shallow-water paddlecraft recreation area” in the section where contamination will not be removed.

The $190M agreement is here.

A press report from the City attorney about the agreement can be found here.  Text of the article is here.

Marina Middle School

Located on Fillmore between Chestnut and Bay in the Marina .  A gas holder for the Fillmore MGP was located on the site and pipes crisscrossed the grounds.  The MGP operated from about 1883 to 1906.  The gas holder continued to be used into the 1920s.  Multiple plans to test for contamination at the school site have been made beginning in 2010.  Results of testing, if any, have not been made public.

A diagram showing the gas holder and pipe lines in relation to the school property can be found here.
